Oxidized glutathione binds approximately 2 moles of
solvent (water, ethanol, acetone) per mole. The
solvent is only removed with some decomposition at
high temperatures (>100 °C) in a very high vacuum
and cannot be removed by lyophilization.
Oxidized glutathione was prepared by simply bubbling
oxygen gas through reduced glutathione at pH 8. This
procedure left a small amount of by-products, so a
second method has been followed more recently. A
hydrogen peroxide solution is added at pH >6.5 to the
reduced glutathione in order to leave only water as a
by-product.
