Biochem/physiol Actions
Inhibits protein synthesis (elongation) at the level of transpeptidation (aminoacyl translocation A-site to P-site).
Mode of Action: Inhibits elongation at transpeptidation step.
Antimicrobial spectrum: Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.

红霉素是由红霉素链霉菌（Streptomyces erythreus）所产生的大环内酯（macrolide）系的代表性的抗菌素。主要对革兰氏阳性菌具有抗菌性。LD50为200―400毫克/公斤，作用机理在于与细菌的聚核糖体结合而抑制肽链的延伸。作用机制主要是与核糖核蛋白体的50S亚单位相结合，抑制肽酰基转移酶，影响核糖核蛋白体的移位过程，妨碍肽链增长，抑制细菌蛋白质的合成，系抑菌剂。
性状和溶解：红霉素为白色或类白色的结晶或粉末；无臭，味苦；微有引湿性。在甲醇、乙醇或丙酮中易溶，在水中极微溶解。
