白色单斜晶系晶体或结晶性粉末，用乙醇水溶液重洁净者为无色板状或鳞片状结晶。无臭，有特殊苦味。熔点约315℃。5%水溶液的PH值为5.5~7.0。对热、光及空气稳定。易溶于水（8.85g/100ml，25℃)，几乎不溶于乙醇和乙醚。
